Doctor of Philosophy Degree

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is primarily a research program that provides advanced study through the discipline of academic research and writing.  It aims to develop in the student an informed, critical approach to a chosen field of study through graduate courses, mastery of languages, and a thesis. 

 

A Ph.D. can be earned with a major in Biblical Studies or Theological Studies. 48 semester hours of academic work is required for the Ph.D. The 42 hours of course work includes the following: 39 hours of academics, 3 hours for the dissertation proposal, and 6 hours for the 50,000 word dissertation.

Admission requirements include:
  1. A First Degree in Theology:  Applicants must have a Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Arts, or Master of Divinity degree (or equivalent) from an acceptable theological school.

  2. Acceptable Grade Point Average:  Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for the first degree in theology.

  3. Application Form:  Application forms are available on request from the Office of Graduate Theological Education at Trinity Baptist Seminary.

  4. Transcripts:  Official transcripts of college and seminary work must be sent directly from the schools to Trinity Baptist Seminary.

  5. Recommendations:  Three letters of academic recommendation are to be sent directly to Trinity.  If an applicant comes from a school that does not give letter grades or uses some form of pass/fail system, five letters of recommendation regarding academic performance and potential are required from professors with whom the applicant has studied.

  6. Application Fee:  A fee of $25.00 must accompany the application. The fee is not refundable.
